Mainland law to address 'square dancing' takes effect

A new mainland law takes effect today that if the music at the public squares or noise from renovations disturbs the public, a fine of up to 1,000 yuan may be imposed.

Some mainland residents welcome the rule.

Areas including schools, residences, medical facilities designated as noise-sensitive zones will also strengthen noise management.

People engaging in square dancing should also be mindful of volume. In plazas and parks, entertainment and fitness activities must comply with site-specific volume limits, and loudspeakers are prohibited in noise-sensitive zones.

Indoor renovation work should be conducted within prescribed hours and take measures to prevent or reduce noise pollution.

If these acts disturb the public and persistently ignore warnings, individuals may be fined up to 1,000 yuan, and each entity up to 20,000 yuan.

Additionally, the code also stipulates that if a restaurant in a residential area emits oil fumes that disturb residents, fines can reach up to 100,000 yuan.
