WSJ: Trump floats idea of Iran deal without nuclear disarmament

A Wall Street Journal report, citing US officials, says US President Donald Trump may be willing to make concessions on Iran's nuclear ownership to negotiate the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with Tehran.

The report says Trump has been floating the idea privately as he and the adminsitration work towards declaring a victory in the Iran war.

The report notes Trump sought to include nuclear talks as part of broader negotiations with Iran, "but those have proven too difficult, leading the White House in recent weeks to focus more on reopening the Strait of Hormuz."

That "scaled-back objective," however, became more difficult when Iran insisted Saturday "on its highest price yet" for seeking billions of dollars in US retribution, the removal of American troops from the region, and an end of the US naval blockade, among other things, the report said, adding that "recent chaos in negotiations signalled Tehran is prepared for a long and grinding conflict."

In his most recent televised interview, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed his country's commitment to pursuing dialogue for safeguarding its rights while highlighting that Tehran will not be forced to surrender.
