Police arrest close to 1,000 for illegal gambling during World Cup

The police conducted an operation targeting illegal gambling over the course the FIFA World Cup tournament and arrested close to 1,000 people.

Authorities also seized over 365 million dollars' worth in betting records.A total of 249 venues suspected of being linked to illegal gambling were busted during the operation, with 645 men and 346 women aged between 16 and 93 arrested.

The individuals were arrested on suspicion of receiving bribes, operating illegal gambling facilities and money laundering.

Police officers also seized 3 million dollars in cash and 4.4 million dollars' worth of items including computers and mobile phones believed to be used for criminal activities.
