A light truck collided with a taxi on Tsing Sha Highway, killing two taxi passengers.
The deceased are a firefighter and his wife.
Sources say the firefighter rescued an elderly man who attempted to take his own life at the Kwun Tong pier last Wednesday when he was off duty.
The truck driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Dashcam footage captured the moment of the fatal collision.
A white light truck is seen travelling along the fast lane and appears to lose control, ramming into a taxi in the slow lane.
The taxi is seen pushed towards the roadside, flipping several times before coming to a halt.
Two passengers were reportedly thrown out of the vehicle.
The taxi lay sideways, severely damaged while the light truck overturned.
The accident unfolded at around 10:30pm last night as both vehicles were heading toward Kowloon on Tsing Sha Highway, near Hoi Lai Estate.
The 38-year-old male and 35-year-old female taxi passengers were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Both drivers passed breathalyser tests.
The 30-year-old taxi driver injured his right hand and was conscious when taken to hospital.
The 44-year-old truck driver -- unscathed -- has been arrested for dangerous driving causing death.
Police do not rule out the possibility that the taxi passengers were not wearing seatbelts at the time.
The cab company, BigBoss Taxi, expresses condolences to the victims' families, adding it would fully cooperate with the police, including providing dashcam records to help determine the cause of the accident.
