California governor Gavin Newsom, a long-time rival of Donald Trump, says in a video posted on X Monday that he and his wife are on the Republican president's hit list, accusing the Justice Department of undertaking what he suggests are investigations for political retribution.

This after Trump publicly called for Newsom's arrest over his alleged obstruction of immigration enforcement last year. Newsom says, "In recent days, federal agents have knocked on the doors of family, friends and former employees. Not because they found a crime, because they're simply trying to find one. Donald Trump isn't just coming after me because of my mean tweets. He's coming after me because I'm considering running for president, because he hates that I consistently called him out over and over again for his lies and deceit."

"And to Donald Trump, this country, this country does not belong to you. It does not belong to your cronies, and we're gonna fight your lawlessnes. And we are going to continue to remind the people of this country of your corruption."

A person familiar with the matter denies the existence of specific investigation targeting the governor, but acknowledges there are multiple federal probes surrounding Newsom, including one related to his wife's taxes. Sources say the probes began in 2025 following whistleblower complaints in California government.

During his second term in the White House, Trump repeatedly came after the Democrat-led state, withholding aid for wildfire recovery and curbing a plan to reduce planet-warning emissions from cars.

Newsom also fought back at Trump's push for more GOP seats in Texas by redrawing congressional districts in California before the national midterms.
