One of the most ambitious public artworks Paris has seen in decades - the Pont Neuf Cavern by artist JR is now open.
The installation was originally set to open on June 6 but had to go through 10 days of reparations due to a storm ripping off the inflatable structure. The installation is as high as a six-story building.
Yet it is built almost entirely from air - 80 fabric arches filled with 20,000 cubic meters of it - and weighs only about five tons.
The fabric was hand-stitched by 25 artisans in a village in Brittany.
The installation is a nod to two Paris legends: the late artistic duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude who in 1985 wrapped Pont Neuf - and its streetlamps - in a pale golden fabric.
The project, which took years of negotiations with the authorities, helped define the genre of monumental public art in modern cities across the world.
