United Kingdom to ban social media for under-16s

The United Kingdom is set to ban social media sites for under-16s and impose restrictions on gaming and livestreaming platforms.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is pushing for one of the most far-reaching online restrictions to date.

"It is clear to me a full ban is the right choice," said Starmer.

As well as a ban on sites such as Tik Tok, Snapchat and Instagram, Starmer is taking action against gaming and livestreaming services which now allow children to talk to strangers.

But in Australia, young people say a ban put in place last year is not working.

They say social media companies should be doing more to stop children accessing harmful content.
