Broadway fell into disarray as the New York Knicks wins their first NBA championship in 53 years, with exuberant celebrations marred by mayhem and violence, including gunshots in Times Square.
As many as seven gunshots were heard fired around the area, as the Knick's owner James Dolan urges fans to stay calm.
Soon after the Knicks nabbed their historic win against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday, rowdy fans were clashing with police, smashing windshields, scaling scaffolding, light poles and a statue, climbing into and atop school buses in Times Square and trying to hitch a ride on a moving fire truck.Later, one of the buses was engulfed in flames.
Police say gunshots were fired near 42nd Street and Broadway and that multiple arrests have been made. No one has been reported injured.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani urges fans to celebrate responsibly and to behave in a way that reflects "the very best" of the city.
The city will officially celebrate the Knicks on Thursday with a parade and City Hall ceremony.
