The US government announced a drawdown of 700 federal officers from Minnesota, roughly a quarter of the total deployed around the state.

President Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan made the announcement on Wednesday.

The immigration operations have upended the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and escalated protests.

Some residents feel the reduction is a step in the right direction, but others fear that federal officers will simply be sent to other communities.

Homan said the aim is to withdraw all the federal agents eventually.

US Border Czar TOM HOMAN: "My goal with the support of President Trump is to achieve a complete drawdown and end this surge as soon as we can. But that is largely contingent upon the end of the illegal and threatening activities against ICE and its federal partners that we're seeing in the community."
