A mainland student was sentenced to three months in jail for using forged TOEFL scores to graduate from Lingnan University.
Back in 2023, the final-year student needed a TOEFL score of 87 or an IELTS score of 6.5 to graduate.
After failing four times, she travelled to Cambodia to hire a proxy to take the test for her.
The scam was uncovered by the university when staff noticed the photo on her score report did not match with her face. The defendant pleaded guilty to obtaining services by deception.
The court described the act as serious as money laundering. This follows a similar case where another male student from the same college was imprisoned for three months.
