Six people died when a business jet crashed during takeoff as a snowstorm moved in and visibility diminished in the US state of Maine. The Bombardier Challenger 600 flipped over and burned on takeoff at Bangor International Airport.

This, as an extreme winter storm continued to batter much of the US. The most lingering effects are concentrated in a band from far eastern Texas across north Louisiana, Mississippi and into Nashville, Tennessee.

Officials in Mississippi are warning damage clean up and power restoration could take a week or more.

Tate Reeves, Mississippi governor said: "Ice storms are different than virtually any other type of storm that we deal with. And it's particularly different when you see the ice come in and then 48 hours or so after the precipitation leaves, the temperature has still not gotten above freezing, and therefore it just creates challenges in terms of getting assets deployed."

More than 800,000 power outages caused by the winter storm were reported across the US as of Tuesday. Over 150,000 of them are in Nashville, Tennessee. About 140,000 remain without power in hard-hit Mississippi, and 115,000 more in Louisiana.
