Former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Gregory So Kam-leung, has passed away at the age of 67. Chief Executive John Lee and Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau expressed their condolences.

So, a lawyer by profession, studied in Canada and worked in a law firm there until returning to Hong Kong in the 1990s.

He joined the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) to assist in policy research, later serving as its vice-chairman.

In 2008, he was appointed by the government as Deputy Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, and in 2011, he was promoted to Secretary.

During his tenure, he was responsible for drafting the Competition Ordinance and the Copyright Amendment Ordinance, among others. He also introduced numerous measures to enhance the attractiveness of Hong Kong's tourism industry and promoted the Belt and Road Initiative.

Chief Executive John Lee said So served Hong Kong society with professional knowledge and enthusiasm, making significant contributions to Hong Kong. He expressed his condolences on his passing and extended his deepest sympathies to his family.
