A 5.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Shizuoka Prefecture in Japan early Sunday, leaving at least 22 people injured, with no tsunami warning issued.
The earthquake occured at around 1am local time, centered in western Shizuoka Prefecture at a focal depth of approximately 40 kilometres.
Tremors were felt across the Tokai and Chubu regions, as well as in Tokyo.
Multiple areas in neighbouring Aichi Prefecture recorded a maximum seismic intensity of upper 5, marking the first time in nearly 30 years an earthquake with an intensity of 5 or above was recorded in the prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency stated this earthquake will not affect the Nankai Trough plate boundary, but warned earthquakes of magnitude 5 or above may occur over the coming week or so.
