Democrats have gained grounds in multiple swing states including Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire and North Carolina.

About 6 in 10 North Carolina voters stated their Republican Senate nominee Michael Whatley's over-support for President Donald Trump had prompted them to back Democrats.

Roy Cooper defeated Whatley who Trump picked to replace retiring Sen. Thom Tillis. On Tuesday, Cooper arrived on stage with his wife Kristin in Raleigh to celebrate his election victory.

"And together, we are standing up for the people Washington has let down. Tonight, guys, we told Washington loud and clear that North Carolinians will always matter more than the billionaires and the insiders. Tonight, we show the country that when everyday people come together, we can make change," he said.

The Democratic romp continued in South Carolina.

Incumbent Sen. Darline Graham was publicly encouraged by Trump to run for the full term as she filled the seat of her late brother Lindsey Graham.

But she lost to Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician who became the first woman elected to represent South Carolina in the Senate.

Andrews told a cheering crowd that she would stand up for her state even if it means disagreeing with other Democrats.

Two helicopters laden with ballots to be counted arrived in Los Angeles, California as the midterms came to a close.

Elsewhere, Nevada's Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford won a closely-watched race to become the state's first Black governor, expanding the Democratic Party's control of state governments in key battlegrounds.

The Senate race in Alaska between Democratic candidate Mary Peltola and Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan has yet to be called early on Wednesday. Peltola has denied involvement in alleged voter deception following reports that her campaign recruited a second Dan Sullivan to run.

The party's Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer noted there is now a generational remake of the Senate map that is going to change America. "We Democrats have won the Senate. Relief is on the way."

Schumer said, "And the American people reduced the red brick wall to a pile of bricks. Americans voted for change, and now Democrats must deliver. I hope Republicans learn the lesson that they failed to see up to tonight. Listen to the American people, listen to the American people. They want us to focus on, again, costs, chaos, corruption."
