Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan has revealed that 16,000 people had applied for the comprehensive written exam for ride-hailing drivers. Applications for operating platforms will close next Friday.
Speaking on a radio programme, Chan said authorities will review the proposals promptly to decide how many companies get the green light. Chan said she hoped this initiative attracts capable and experienced platform companies to operate in Hong Kong.
The key would be their commitment to setting up a team and aligning with the policy that ride-hailing cars or taxis can coexist and complement each other. Chan added the government will compare proposals based on passenger experience, such as wait times and vehicle allocation, to select diverse and competitive options for the public.
