The Greek Orthodox church in Karak was seen with broken windows and bloodstains on its floor after gunmen opened fire during a funeral, killing seven people and wounding 40 others.

The attack took place in Karak, about 180 kilometres (110 miles) south of Jordan's capital, Amman.

Footage broadcast on Jordanian state television showed two gunmen, apparently armed with pistols, approaching the church and firing shots.

A third man, apparently carrying a semiautomatic rifle, then approached and opened fire. All three ran toward the church.

King Abdullah II visited the wounded at a hospital after the attack.

He also vowed a strong response to the shooting and offered condolences to the victims' families.

Jordan's Health Minister Ibrahim al-Budour said two of the wounded were in critical condition.

Jordan declared three days of national mourning, according to the kingdom's Petra News Agency.

A government statement said that the attack was "carried out by unknown assailants" but didn't say whether any gunmen were captured or killed.
