The first-instance trial of the Wei family crime group -- which is one of the four major clans involved in telecom fraud in northern Myanmar -- concluded in Fujian with three ring leaders sentenced to death.

The case was tried in the Quanzhou Intermediate People's Court.

Wei Huairen and two other ring leaders were sentenced to death.

Three defendants received life imprisonment.

And the remaining 55 defendants were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three years and three months to 24 years.

The court heard that since 2019, key figures including Wei Huairen leveraged the Wei family's clout in Kokang of northern Myanmar

to develop armed forces, and conduct telecom fraud, run gambling dens and prostitution-related activities, totalling some 12.2 billion yuan in proceeds.

The operations also resulted in the deaths of multiple Chinese citizens.
