Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mabel Chan says the inaugural ceremony for the southbound travel for Guangdong yachts scheme will take place next Friday.

Writing on her blog, Chan says her bureau and the Marine Department will hold the inaugural ceremony.

She describes the southbound scheme as a two-way maritime connection, building on the existing northbound scheme for Hong Kong yachts.

The recent National Day Golden Week marks the first major holiday since the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicle scheme expanded to all mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area.

During this period, more than 670,000 passengers and 170,000 vehicles travelled across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

For the northbound travel for Hong Kong cars scheme, drivers currently travel without reservations on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The government is discussing with Guangdong authorities to expand this arrangement to other non-peak weekdays.
