HKU Med launches app supporting advanced cancer patients

HKU Med launched a mobile app which aims to assist advanced cancer patients who reside at their homes to monitor their health conditions and reduce their need for hospitalisation.

Named SUPPORT+, the app uses data compiled by health personnel on users' cancer conditions, which grants both patients and their carers essential information about the disease's symptoms.

Some 2,800 eligible patients can also make use of the app's online nurse support platform to make inquiries.

The HKU Med research team behind the app said some 1,200 individuals from six hospitals took part in the app's development.

It noted only 17.2 percent of those who use the app have sought for unplanned hospitalisations, which is lower than advanced cancer patients who seek standard care by 11.3 percentage points.
