Woman on death row for murder in Nashville, Tennessee is now in critical condition after surviving two lethal injection at her execution.

State authorities are now investigating Christa Pike’s botched execution at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.

Pike’s lawyer says she’s “alive right now” Thursday, hours after the injections, and repeats calls for her sentence to be commuted to life in prison after enduring what they describe as “chemical torture."

She appears to be the first person known to have survived after execution drugs entered her body, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, a non-profit group in Washington.

Pike, 50, was sentenced to death in the 1990s after being convicted of a murder she carried out as a teenager.
