Russian strikes on Kyiv and Ukraine's northeastern regions kill 8

Russia's latest missile and drone blitz that targeted what it says were military-linked facilities across Ukraine has struck key power hubs and turned several apartment buildings into ruins, despite renewed appeals at the United Nations General Assembly to seek a settlement to the four-and-a-half year war.

Ukraine retaliated by launching attacks on oil refineries in Russia's Bashkortostan and Samara regions in the past day, alongside unspecified strikes in the Black Sea.

This as the Kremlin indicates a trilateral meeting with Kyiv and Washington could be held in future.

The Ukrainian air forces claim they have shot down or suppressed 119 of the swarm of Russian drones unleashed overnight. The State Emergency Service reports two people were killed by ballistic missiles and at least 8 others injured in capital Kyiv.

Although Moscow says it hit Ukraine's defense facilities, logistics and telecoms centres, as well as vessels used by the military, civilian infrastructure bore the brunt of the attacks.

As many as 18 sites across the city sustained direct impacts, while falling debris scattered over an additional 8 areas.

Warehouse buildings in the Solomianskyi district have been partially damaged, triggering fires at basement areas.

In the Podilskyi district, four parked cars were engulfed in flames at a maternity hospital where a body was found at the scene. Officials say the blast tore through the hospital's facade, damaged its windows and warped doors.

Explosions also rocked a three-storey administrative building in Dniprovskyi, and one resident was found wounded.

In the Black Sea port of Odesa, the local military chief says a night of Russian bombardment has left a medial facility damaged and blew out windows in surrounding houses and classrooms.

A separate strike on a vegetable storage facility at a farm in the northeastern Kharkiv region claimed six lives and injured a further 12.

Meanwhile in New York, Ukrianian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy used his speech at the UN General Assembly to urge countries to starve Moscow of revenue through sanctions and trade bans.

As his country faces the grim prospect of a brutal winter, Zelenskyy met with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines for discussions on Black Sea security, focusing on ways to ensure the operation of Ukraine's maritime export corridor.

During talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Zelenskyy issued an urgent plea for a winter defense package and more Patriot interceptors, which he describes as the only effective weapons to counter ballistic missiles.

In another development, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted Friday that a potential trilateral meeting between the US, Russia and Ukraine to end the conflict could happen soon without elaborating on further details.

Zelenskyy said earlier that it would be a technical meeting and might take place in the United Arab Emirates.
