Tropical storm Chan-hom was travelling west over the Pacific Ocean and was approaching northeastern Japan on Tuesday.
Japan Meteorological Agency said as of late Tuesday morning the storm was packing sustained surface winds of 82.8 kilometres per hour and was about 260 kilometres off the southeastern coast of Fukushima prefecture.
The agency said the storm is expected to make landfall late Tuesday in the greater Tokyo region and bring heavy rain and strong wind cutting across the main archipelago toward the Korean Peninsula.
