Starting October, public residential estates managed by the Housing Society will see a rent hike of 2.85%.

Under the current mechanism, the Housing Society reviews rental levels every two years.

Following reviews of years 2026 to 2028, the rent for 20 public housing estates in Categories A and B will see an average monthly increase of about 73 to 200 dollars, affecting over 32,000 units.

However, the four public housing estates newly built in the past two years will not be included in the latest rent adjustment.

The Housing Society says the increase has balanced operating costs and affordability. It will continue to provide rent reductions of a quarter or half for tenants facing temporary financial difficulties.

The Housing Society adds owing to the ageing conditions of rental estates, operating expenses have increased over the past two years, including the need to upgrade estate facilities so operating losses are expected in the next two years.

Recently, the Housing Authority has also approved a 2.04% rent hike for its public rental housing starting October.
