Remnants of the village of Somang remerges in a reservoir that is drying up amid prolonged drought in Indonesia.

The village, located in Banten province, was submerged as part of the Karian reservoir project, which was built between 2015 and 2023 to supply water to the Greater Jakarta area.

Four months without rain have lowered the water level, revealing houses, a mosque, and other buildings in the former residential area.

Erma Yulihastin, an expert on extreme weather and climate at the National Research and Innovation Agency, says hot and dry El Nino conditions have not peaked yet and is expected to continue on to the end of the year.
