Xiang Zhang sent an email to University of Hong Kong staff and students early this morning, announcing he will step down from his post of the President and Vice-Chancellorship in 2028, after completing his 10-year tenure.
He said, "it is time for HKU to embrace fresh ideas and for a new leader to guide this great transformation", adding he had informed HKU Council Chairman Wong Tung-shun to give the University ample time to search for its next leader.
Zhang said he hopes to continue the path with the HKU community in the next two years, while expressing his desire to return to his laboratory, answer profound scientific questions and make a societal impact.
