Heavy showers set to hit Hong Kong over the weekend as Noul approaches

The Hong Kong Observatory will issue the Standby Signal No.1 at 8:40pm. This comes as tropical cyclone Noul is forecast to enter within 800 kilometres of the territory this evening. Weather authorities may upgrade the tropical cyclone signal on Saturday afternoon depending on the intensity and direction of Noul.

Thanks to the outer subsiding air of tropical cyclone Noul, the Observatory says temperatures over many places rose to 34 degrees Celsius or above on Friday afternoon.

According to the present forecast, Noul will move west-northwest at about 26 kilometres an hour across the Luzon Strait. It is expected to intensify and edge closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong and has a chance of making a landfall over the vicinity of Huizhou to Jieyang early on Sunday.

The Observatory says it may issue the Strong Wind Signal No.3 on Saturday afternoon depending on the change in intensity of Noul, the distance of its strong winds from Hong Kong and the local wind conditions.

Under the effects of Noul, weather authorities say Hong Kong will be hit by heavy squally showers and thunderstorms later on Saturday to Sunday. The Observatory is now predicting force 8 winds on high grounds in the early parts of Sunday.
