Chief Mouser Larry the Cat to welcome new Prime Minister to 10 Downing

As new Labour Party leader Andy Burnham is handed the keys to the Prime Minister’s official residence at 10 Downing Street, he’ll have to get used to his housemate, long-time resident Larry the cat.

That means Downing Street's long-term resident Larry the cat will have a new boss.

The feline has become a firm favourite with media outside the British Prime Minister's official residence.

Larry arrived in February 2011, selected from the animal shelter, Battersea Dogs and Cats home. The tabby cat was recruited by then-Prime Minister David Cameron to solve a rat crisis at one of the world's most famous addresses, hence earning him the moniker Chief Mouser.

The government website says Larry spends his days "greeting guests..., inspecting security defences and testing antique furniture for napping quality".

His day-to-day responsibilities also include "contemplating a solution to the mouse occupancy of the house," it adds.

Larry, a former stray, has been known to take a relaxed approach to his mousing duties.

Larry has witnessed many world leaders enter his home. And he's also outlasted numerous Prime Ministers during his tenure.

David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and now Keir Starmer have spent less time in their jobs than Larry has in his.
