Severe Typhoon Bavi continues to approach Taiwan, prompting all northern counties and cities of the island to suspend work and classes.
In Taitung, it was still sunny in the morning, but the wind and waves have grown visibly stronger, with huge waves crashing onto the pedestrian walkways from time to time.
Along the north coast of New Taipei City, the wind has begun to pick up. Some members of the public who came to watch the waves were urged to leave by Coast Guard personnel.
At this large supermarket in Taipei City, a massive crowd of people arrived to stock up on goods, with the checkout line requiring a wait of at least half an hour.
Taiwan has already issued sea and land warnings. Multiple counties and cities, including Taipei City and New Taipei City, have suspended work and classes for the entire day.
At Taoyuan Airport, at least 153 flights have been canceled today, with another 760 flights expected to be canceled tomorrow.
Typhoon Bavi is expected to brush past the waters east of Taiwan before making landfall tomorrow night along the coast from Fuqing, Fujian to Wenling, Zhejiang. The National Meteorological Center has issued an orange typhoon warning, and fishing boats in Fujian are returning to port in batches to take shelter from the storm.
