UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigns

Speaking at 10 Downing Street, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he will step down after mounting political pressure.

It marks less than two years after he won a landslide election victory.

Keir Starmer told the press, "The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace."

Keir Starmer, who has led the Labour Party since 2020, was elected prime minister in 2024.

As of Monday, no formal challenge to his leadership had begun, though some party members have recently identified Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, as a potential successor. Burnham is returning to the British parliament after winning a by election on Sunday.
