A blast that rocked a building said to be storing explosives in northeastern Myanmar at noon on Sunday has killed at least 46 people, including several children. More than 70 others were injured.

An investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.

The blast occurred in a village 3 kilometres south of the Chinese border, where large quantities of gelignite used for mining and stone quarrying were stored. Smoke was seen rising from the damaged structure.

Myanmar media report 50 to 55 deaths from the blast.

Local authorities say they are offering medical care and resettlement assistance to those affected.

The area is under the control of the Ta'ang National Liberation Army.
