《唱歌講英文》：Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

大家好，Smoke Gets in Your Eyes這首歌早在1933年面世，但我們最熟悉的是1965年The Platters版本。

歌中朋友們警告作者，愛情是盲目的，當心燒得紅時，眼睛容易被煙蒙蔽。

他們說總有一天，你會發現戀愛中的人都是盲目的。當你的心燒著了，你必須了解，煙霧會蒙蔽你的雙眼 (They said someday you'll find, all who love are blind, oh oh. When your heart's on fire, you must realise, smoke gets in your eyes)。

但作者嘲笑朋友們太悲觀，所以我嘲笑他們 (so I chaffed them)，chaff解作嘲笑，現在已經很少使用。

Chaff本指穀物的外殼，比喻一些沒有用的東西。這句俗語to separate the chaff from the wheat，意思是指打穀，區分有用和沒有用的東西。

最後作者真的被愛人抛棄，因此朋友們嘲笑他 (now, laughing friends deride tears I cannot hide)。

To chaff是友善的嘲笑，但to deride就比較嚴重，有貶低和批判的意味。

所以作者最後苦笑道，當愛火熄滅時，一樣會冒煙，令人流淚。

我笑著說，當愛火熄滅，煙霧會蒙蔽你的雙眼 (So I smile and say, when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes.)。
