According to the New York Times, US officials concluded a former executive at a Singapore-based cloud computing company suspected of gathering intelligence for China gained access to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
The outlet said the former executive worked in a leadership role for a company called Megaspeed. The company buys chips from Nvidia and uses them to build data centres. It then rents out the computing power.
The New York times said the former executive was under surveillance by US officials tasked with preventing China from evading export controls that restrict transfers of high-end chips.
The outlet said the officials learnt the suspected asset had met with the Nvidia CEO multiples times. Nvidia said Huang's meetings "were not unusual or unexpected."
In Beijing, the Foreign Ministry called the New York Times report "groundless and purely a smear against China."
