Defeated presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro challenged Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's election victory on Monday, alleging abuses of political and economic power, and accusing his opposition of "illegally spreading lies" to "terrorise the Brazilian people."

Speaking online, Bolsonaro slammed the vote extension granted by the Supreme Court, stating: "What happened this election Sunday was not normal; everyone saw."

He also claimed that authorities abused their power to upset the electoral contest, adding: "I will seek to have Lula's ticket disqualified over all the abuses he committed."

According to Bolsonaro, federal police subsequently ordered him to surrender his passports and barred him from leaving the country.

Incumbent president Lula secured a decisive victory with over 64 million votes compared to just under 60 million for Bolsonaro, repreenting a winning margin of nearly 4%.
