Vatican confirms Pope Leo’s cancer diagnoses and successful surgery

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with cancer after a successful surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung.

Tests confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, the Vatican said in a medical bulletin after the surgery.

It said the diagnosis had been suspected by preoperative tests and was confirmed during surgery.

The statement did not mention treatments going forward, with the Vatican saying doctors were not currently speaking about chemotherapy or other therapies as results of other tests are still pending.
