The Pentagon has announced the firing squad execution of

Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed after

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the execution would be "public."

Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others

at a Texas military base in 2009, a shooting Hegseth has linked to

radical Islamist ideologies.

Former Army Major, psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan

walked into a medical building where

soldiers were waiting in line to receive

medical clearance for deployment in Fort Hood, Texas in 2009.

He shouted "Allahu akbar" - Arabic for "God is great!" -

and opened fire with a laser-sighted handgun.

If carried out, the livestreamed firing squad will

mark the first public execution in America in close to a century.

Hasan could choose to file a petition against both the execution

and livestream, according to legal experts.

Amid recent renewed debate surrounding the death penalty

after convicted murderer Christa Pike survived two lethal injections

during her execution in Tennessee, scholars has suggested

a firing squad is the "least inhumane" way to kill, though there are

drawbacks.
