This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded in Norway's
Oslo to South African jurist and human rights leader
Naventhem 'Navi' Pillay for her dedicated efforts to
"promote peace and international law."
Pillay is an anti-apartheid pioneer who was appointed
by Nelson Mandela in 1995 as the first non-white
woman judge in her country's High Court.
She also served as a judge and president of the International
Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and presided over a
ruling that legally classified rape and sexual violence
as acts of genocide.
In 2025, she led the UN Commission in publishing a
landmark reporting concluding Israel is responsible for
committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
The accolade comes with a 1.2-million-US-dollar prize.
