Members of the Indonesian parliament have ordered the demolition of several buildings of a luxury prison compound near the capital Jakarta amid growing public outcry.

Ombudsman investigators found more than 10 residential units separate from regular prison cells in Cibinong allegedly used by favoured inmates during a surprise inspection tour on September 23.

Lawmakers were shown amenities including air conditioners, big-screen TVs, fridges and sofas, with a gym and a golf simulator under construction in the area.

The prison holds more than 1,800 inmates, which makes it one of the most heavily populated prisons on Java Island.

Indonesia's deputy commission chairman says the apartment-style accommodation should be razed immediately to prevent further misuse.
