Another horse racing season kicks off

Punters surge to the Sha Tin Racecourse on Sunday as the new racing season kicks off. Many are there to watch Ka Ying Rising's attempt to secure its 21st consecutive victory.

Striking the gong -- a ceremonial ritual that marks the start of the new horse racing season. Many punters believe the gesture could bring luck and prosperity. A ceremony is also held to mark the season opening, attended by Chief Executive John Lee and Hong Kong Jockey Club's Chairman, Martin Liao.

While 10 races are scheduled for the day, most people set their eyes on Ka Ying Rising, the six-year-old sprinter competing in the HKSAR Chief Executive's Cup, hoping to witness the moment of the horse extending its record winning streak to 21 victories.

Ka Ying Rising did not disappoint: the star sprinter secured its 21st consecutive victory by completing the 1200-metre race in a new track record time of 1:06.11.

Apart from local punters, some overseas visitors come to the season opening for the ambience. German Tourist Yolanda says "We are not trying to gain any profit but would be nice (if we did). We are just here for the event and how the people react."

On social media, Chief Executive John Lee notes that more than 400,000 people visited Hong Kong's two racecourses in the previous racing season. Lee says the government will continue to promote horse racing tourism through hosting more mega events with other sectors.
