Firefighters battle wildfires in Greece at seaside community

In Greece, firefighters battled wildfires in the seaside community of Porto Germeno on Sunday. Flames also threatened buildings on the island of Kefalonia, forcing evacuations from inland communities.

Flames threatened buildings on Kefalonia forcing evacuations as blazes were seen burning dangerously close to homes. Aircraft made water drops over the Ionian island. And firefighters were battling wildfires in the seaside community of Porto Germeno.

Nearly 500 firefighters and 23 aircraft were deployed, but gale-force winds strengthened the fire crippling the response.

Gale-force winds were driving flames deeper into western Attica,the administrative region that includes the capital, Athens, threatening villages and an industrial district outside the city of Megara as violent gusts prevented firefighting aircraft from collecting water from the sea.
