Moutai liquor served as lifesaving medicine during Long March

Kweichow Moutai, one of China's Four Greatest Liquors, turns out to have been a lifesaving medicine during the Red Army's Long March. It is a precious chapter of history preserved in the town of Moutai.

This is the famous site of the Zunyi Conference, which has now been developed into a memorial hall, that preserves many precious historical records from that era.

In mid-March 1935, the Central Red Army arrived in Moutai Town. With the help of local villagers, they built pontoon bridges using salt boats and door planks, completing the fourth crossing of the Chishui River in late March, completely shaking off the encirclement by hundreds of thousands of enemy troops.

Local residents offered Moutai liquor to comfort the troops.

With medical supplies scarce, soldiers discovered that Moutai liquor could relax muscles, invigorate blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and relieve swelling. They used it to wash their faces and feet, treat wounds, and ease fatigue.

His mother saw the Red Army passing through right in front of their house. Although it was only for a short stay, the impact they left behind was far-reaching and profound.

Once a lifesaving remedy on the battlefield, Moutai liquor is now ranked among China's Four Greatest Liquors. The place of origin, Moutai, remains a living testament to that very history.
