The Standby Signal No. 1 is in force. According to the present forecast by the Observatory, the tropical depression will intensify gradually and move in the general direction of Hainan Island today, maintaining a distance of 500 kilometres or more from Hong Kong. The Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force today.
With the tropical cyclone edging closer to the coast of southern China, local winds will strengthen gradually tomorrow and the weather will become unsettled. Squally showers will increase. Due to the effect of terrain, gale force winds may affect parts of high ground briefly. Depending on the change of its intensity, the distance of its strong winds from the Pearl River Estuary and local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tomorrow.
There will be swells. Members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports, and take note of the latest weather information.
