Expert believes the three major quakes are not related

A Hong Kong science expert says the three major earthquakes within 24 hours were caused by plate collisions in different regions.

He believes these events are not related.

Leung Wing-mo, spokesperson for Hong Kong Meteorological Society says the Venezuelan earthquake was caused by the collision of the South American Plate and the Caribbean Plate.

This while the California earthquake was caused by the collision of the Pacific Plate and the California Plate, and the Japanese earthquake happened when the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Okhotsk Plate.

He says it is unlikely the events are related to each other.
