Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended a state banquet in Amsterdam on Wednesday, where the emperor expressed hope for continued peace between Japan and the Netherlands.
Earlier, the Dutch royals formally welcomed the imperial couple with a ceremony, including a guard of honour and wreath-laying at the National Monument.
At an evening banquet, the emperor acknowledged the countries' wartime past, saying "many precious lives were lost" during World War Two, and stressed the importance of passing that history to future generations.
The imperial Japanses military invaded the then-Dutch East Indies during World War Two, causing mass casualties and interning over 130,000 Dutch soldiers and civilians.
The Japanese royals will depart for Belgium on Saturday.
