The Antiquities Advisory Board accepts the government's proposal to list the Stanley Mosque and Hung Shing Temple in Wan Chai as statutory monuments, with the Development Bureau set to follow up on the matter.
Located on Queen's Road East, the Hung Shing Temple was given the Grade 1 historic building status, and is believed to have been constructed between 1847 and 1852.
The historic site remains a regular place of worship for the local Chinese community, and is often praised for blending naturally into the urban cityscape.
The Stanley Mosque, meanwhile, is the city's second-oldest mosque built between 1936 and 1937 in Stanley Prison. Constructed by the South Asian Muslim staff of the facility, it remains the only mosque in the city inside a prison. With the mosque currently closed off to the public, authorities are looking into opening up the site to visitors through reservation.
