Toddler with COVID-19 in serious condition

The city records a case of COVID-19 infection involving a previously healthy 19-month-old toddler who is currently in serious condition.

The Centre for Health Protection says the boy developed fever, runny nose, cough, rapid breathing, and wheezing last Thursday.

After being taken to a private clinic the next day, he was referred to the emergency room at Kwong Wah Hospital, where he was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.

His respiratory sample was tested positive for COVID-19 and he remains hospitalised.

Preliminary investigations show he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19, spent most of his time in Hong Kong during the incubation period, and his three household contacts have shown no symptoms so far.

CHP says it has been nearly a year since the last active COVID-19 cycle ended in Hong Kong, and it is possible the overall activity level of the coronavirus may rise further in the next month or two.
