May marks Foster Care Awareness Month.

With more than 200 children in Hong Kong currently on the waiting list for foster care placements, a charity is calling for enhanced support services in the city.

A self-funded foster care programme run by Mother's Choice has supported children aged up to six over the past decade, helping many find permanent new homes.

Over the past ten years, the organisation recruited 111 foster families and provided care for 141 children. Nearly 80 percent of those children were eventually placed in permanent families.

Despite the progress, demand continues to outpace supply in recent months. The organisation is urging the government to strengthen collaboration with various sectors to expand support for foster families. Mother's Choice will hold information session next month to raise public awareness and encourage more people to consider becoming foster parents.
